Growing up in Visalia, California, Keaton struggled with severe substance use disorder from an early age. With the support of his parents, he entered counseling and treatment, and over time, his future began to look brighter. In 2013, he achieved a milestone that was once a distant dream, graduating from UC Davis. But after graduation, Keaton returned to the same environment and familiar challenges, and old patterns began to resurface.
Keaton decided to move to Portland to seek a fresh start, however, his health deteriorated a second time. While hospitalized at OHSU for a recurring heart infection, he required daily IV antibiotics. Due to his medical condition, his discharge options were extremely limited.
That is when OHSU reached out to Fora Health. As one of the only facilities in Oregon equipped to care for patients with complex, simultaneous medical and substance use needs, Fora Health welcomed Keaton into our specialized medical care level.

During his residential treatment and subsequent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Keaton found a comprehensive foundation for recovery. He participated in peer groups, a running club, and dual-diagnosis counseling to address both his addiction and mental health.
Today, Keaton is thriving. He is working full-time at a fitness studio in the Pearl District, rebuilding his career, and reconnecting with his supportive family. He even shares an apartment with a roommate he met during his time at Fora Health, maintaining the deep community connections he built here. Looking ahead, Keaton is exploring returning to school to pursue a career in healthcare, so he can give back to the system that saved him.
Keaton’s story is a powerful reminder that recovery is rarely linear, but with the right medical and therapeutic support, long-term healing is possible.
