John had a good home and family life growing up, but when he reached high school, he found drugs and alcohol. Despite the influence of his peers, John applied himself in school and realized that he had a mind for business and a passion for cooking. Through a lot of hard work, he made his dreams come true when he started a successful food cart that grew into a brick-and-mortar business.
However, the stress of cooking and being a business owner led John to drink more as a coping mechanism. In addition to drinking and drugs, John began gambling. He experienced many ups and downs; then he started using hard drugs, like fentanyl.
“Everything fell downhill when I started fentanyl. That was something I never experienced before. When you start doing those heavy drugs, your physical need for it is just different.”
John realized he needed help and began researching treatment options. He was advised by someone to consider Fora Health, and that’s where John’s journey to sobriety started. John has received multiple levels of care and treatment at Fora Health; it took time, self-forgiveness, and patience.
“When I came back, everyone was so welcoming, and it made me feel like this is where I need to be.”
John devoted himself to programming and found joy in building relationships, taking on peer leadership services, and discovering new aspects of himself through creative outlets like poetry and art. In the past, John wrapped up his self-worth and identity in business and success. He thought if he didn’t have that, he was nothing. But at Fora Health, he realized he had more to offer the world.
“Now, since I don’t have to hide anything, I can be honest with myself. It makes it easier for me to live and do things the right way.”
